Public Domain
- Flickr's The Commons Under "The Commons," cultural institutions that have reasonably concluded that a photograph is free of copyright restrictions are invited to share such photograph under their new usage guideline called "no known copyright restrictions."
- Getty Open Content Program The Getty makes available, without charge, all available digital images to which the Getty holds the rights or that are in the public domain to be used for any purpose. No permission is required.
- Pixabay A repository for public domain pictures, royalty free stock photos, and copyright free vector graphics. You can use any Pixabay image without attribution in digital and printed form, even for commercial applications.
- Public Domain Pictures A repository for free public domain images.
- The Public Domain Review This resource curates a collection of images, books, films and audio files that are available in the public domain.
- Wikimedia Commons: Free Photography Resources Lists sources of public domain images available online.
Creative Commons
- Bucketlistly A free Creative Commons collection of travel photos.
- Compfight Shows both commercial and Creative Commons images, but it sets off the non-Creative Commons images in a separate section to make the distinction clear.
- Creative Commons The Creative Commons website includes an option to search for Creative Commons content across numerous sources, including Flickr, Google and Wikimedia Commons among many others.
- Europeana An online collection of content from European libraries, archives, museums and other institutions.
- Flickr Search Creative Commons licenses in Flickr.
- Foter This website searches through 190 million Creative Commons-licensed images and allows users to retrieve the code necessary to embed the images on the web with the proper attribution. Foter also offers a Wordpress plugin.
- Gratisography All pictures are photographed by Ryan McGuire and are copyright free.
- Multicolr Search Lab Searches Creative Commons images in Flickr by color.
- Open Clip Art Offers a range of open clip art.
- PhotoPin Created for bloggers, this page searches Flickr and Creative Commons photos.
- Photos for Class Created for teachers to access images for classroom and educational purposes. Downloaded images will automatically cite the author and license terms.
- Splashbase Searches multiple websites with Creative Commons images.
- The Stocks This website collects sites that offer access to royalty free stock photos.
- Unsplash All photos on this site are licensed under a Creative Commons 0 or CC0 license.
- Wikimedia Commons A media file repository that makes public domain and cc licensed images available to everyone.
- Wunderstock Wunderstock searches Creative Commons images and allows you to use filters and markup before downloading.
General Search Engines
Citing Images
A citation for an image or figure should have the following:
- Title of the image
- Author or creator of the image
- Source of the figure or image
- Copyright or Creative Commons license
- Date
- "Reprinted with permission from [Copyright holder]' (if relevant)
- Description of any modifications to the image (if relevant)
Sample citations for Creative Commons images can be found here.
If the original source is a book or journal, include the full citation for the source, not just a URL (even if you originally retrieved the work online). More information about book and article citations can be found on the Pumerantz Library's Citation Style research guide.
If the original source is a website, embed the link to the title rather than typing out the full URL in the citation.
